Knee Pain and What It Means
Knee pain can come from multiple sources. Front knee pain often indicates the saddle is too low or too far forward. Pain on the sides of the knee might suggest the saddle is too high or the position isn’t aligned with your natural leg mechanics. Posterior knee pain (back of the knee) often means the saddle is too high.
Numbness and Saddle Discomfort
If you’re experiencing numbness in your groin or genital area, it’s often related to saddle choice or positioning rather than height. However, saddle height can affect how much weight is distributed through the nose of the saddle. A slightly higher position often helps alleviate this issue by shifting weight to the back of the saddle.
Unstable Feeling While Standing
If you feel wobbly or unstable when standing up out of the saddle, your saddle is likely too high. You shouldn’t have to reach so far that you feel disconnected from your bike.
Lower Back Pain
This is complex and can result from height, fore/aft position, or even handlebar reach. Generally, though, a saddle that’s too high can contribute to lower back strain. Combined with a saddle that’s too far back, this becomes worse.
